Neben Diamant (sp3), Graphit (sp2), Kohlenstoff-Nanoröhren (sp2) und linearen Modifikationen mit sp-hybridisiertem Kohlenstoff (~C≡C–C≡C–C≡C~) eine weitere, von Curl, Kroto und Smalley 1985 entdeckte allotrope Modifikation von Kohlenstoff, dessen geschlossene Käfig-Moleküle aus Fünf- und Sechsringen mit sp2-hybridisierten C-Atomen bestehen.
