Autoprotolysis

Ultrapure water is subject to autoprotolysis. Here, oxonium ions H₃O⁺ and hydroxide ions OH^– are formed. H₂O can react both as a proton donor (acid) or as a proton acceptor (base). This is also referred to as an ampholyte.
