Deoxidation

In steelmaking, the high oxygen affinity of aluminium is used to remove dissolved oxygen from the molten steel. When the molten steel solidifies, the oxygen would otherwise become unpleasantly noticeable as oxide inclusions, especially during subsequent surface treatment. This process is called “deoxidation”.
